Most of us who have suffered from a chronic illness want to get better, recover and be able to get on with our lives.  But those of us who have tried have usually discovered it’s not as easy as waving a magic wand and seeing ourselves recover, but rather it seems that it is a journey, which is usually filled with trial and error and lots of experimentation.  Part of it too, is adopting a new mindset, a different way of thinking.  Here are just some tips that are useful in adopting a new mindset to face and tackle illness.

Another way of putting this is realising that we have weaknesses and deficiencies that we are unable to resolve by ourselves and we need the help of others in order to get better.

Emotional honesty

by recognising we all have emotional pain and being honest about this, rather than cover it up or deny it, this will help us to a place of healing


Learning to look to others and to accept teaching and correction from others is imperative if we are to overcome illness.  Being teachable is likened to being like a young tree, that is able to be bent and moulded, as opposed to an older tree that is hard and stiff, that breaks when moulding is attempted.


Being proactive is also known as being hungry.  In other words, the person will do whatever it takes in order to get better.  There is no guarantee of healing, however, ultimately healing comes to those that are


Being merciful and forgiving is another attitude that is needed.  This means showing love to people even when they do not deserve it.

Pure motives

What is motivating for me?  Why do I do what I do?  This may also be expressed as being pure in heart and we need to look beyond the outward behaviours and look at the motives that determine our actions.

Making peace

Reconciling with people and making relationships with everyone who has been wronged is another attitude that will facilitate healing.


Pursuing what is right no matter what the cost. Healing may be painful and it may require that you go against the grain of other people around you.  It may also result in painful reactions fro other loved ones.
